Municipalities in support of a

Real Estate Transfer Fee

A growing number of cities and towns have passed local legislation seeking to enact a Real Estate Transfer Fee—-currently , these all await approval at the State House. If Massachusetts were to pass statewide, local-option enabling legislation, municipalities would be allowed to decide for themselves whether to enact a Transfer Fee.

The following municipalities have successfully passed Transfer Fee home rule petitions:

Amherst

Aquinnah

Arlington

Boston

Brookline

Cambridge

Chatham

Chilmark

Concord

Edgartown

Nantucket

Oak Bluffs

Provincetown

Somerville

Tisbury

Truro

Wellfleet

West Tisbury

In April, 2024 LOHA distributed to leadership and the entire Massachusetts legislature a letter signed by officials from 27 different municipalities, including Boston Mayor Michelle Wu endorsing the local option real estate transfer fee. You can read the letter here
